Angela and Yo Gotti BreakUp: 3 Hidden Lessons

Angela and Yo Gotti’s Break-up: 3 Hidden Lessons

During an appearance on Angie Martinez’s podcast, Angela Simmons revealed that she and rapper Yo Gotti are no longer a couple after nearly three years of dating.

In this post, I’ll be sharing with you 3 hidden lessons to learn from Angela’s breakup with Yo Gotti.

Angela Simmons Relationship Timeline

In case you’re unaware, Yo Gotti started shooting his shot at TV star Angela Simmons in 2015 after producing his single “Down In The DM”.

However, during that time, Angela was in a relationship with her son’s father, Sutton Tennyson Sr., whom she eventually became engaged to in April 2016, the same year they welcomed their son in September 2016.

Sadly, in late 2017, Angela’s and Sutton’s engagement was called off because of his infidelity.

A year later, he was murdered in his garage after being shot 13 times in November 2018.

After grieving the loss of her child’s father, from 2018 to 2021, Angela was in and out of relationships; however, they never lasted or worked out.

In December 2022, Angela decided to give Yo Gotti a chance, and they went public with their relationship the following year, specifically on New Year’s.

There was much public fascination with Yo Gotti and Angela Simmons’s romance from his long pursuit of her to their appearances at high-profile events, and the luxurious “The One” music video.

Yet, what started as public love ended in a private breakup.

On the Angie Martinez show, Angela gave little detail on the breakup but confirmed the duo’s split when asked if they were still together, stating,

“No, I’m not with him. Not by choice, but I still respect him. I wouldn’t have chosen it, but it was what was best.” -Angela Simmons

To break it down for you, this is what I believe Angela communicated about her breakup with Yo Gotti.

Not by choice” – meaning she didn’t want to end things, and it is likely she still had love, hope, or emotional investment in the relationship,

“But it was what was best”, meaning, despite her feelings, she recognized that continuing the relationship wasn’t fulfilling or aligned with her growth. She had to make a hard, mature decision for her well-being.

Angela and Yo Gotti Breakup: 3 Hidden Lessons

Lesson #1: Don’t Fall For The “Street Dude Fantasy”

Angela seems to have a pattern of getting into relationships with men from a “street background,” and part of following the street dude fantasy.

The ‘Street Dude Fantasy’ is this: believing you can have a healthy relationship with a man who’s devoted to the streets, while maintaining a luxurious lifestyle.

We witness the street dude fantasy heavily within black entertainment. From Cardi B when she was with Offset, Gucci, and Keyshia, Lil Durk and India, or even for this post, Angela with Yo Gotti.

There are so many reasons why

you can’t expect full loyalty and commitment from a street dude. One reason is that their attention will always be divided, divided between you and their side piece, named money. If you would like to learn more about street dudes, check out my post HERE.

Lesson #2: Always Date With Purpose!

Coming from a family where both parents found lasting success in their second marriages, Angela Simmons has always held a strong desire for marriage and a large family.

Angela revealed that even at 17, she wanted to be married with seven kids, and she maintained her convictions by remaining a virgin until age 29.

If marriage is a goal, then dating with purpose is important. If you’re not intentional from the get-go, you’re not just wasting your own time—you’re letting men waste it, too.

Angela did what so many of us do; instead of being upfront about what she wanted, she just went with the flow, hoping that her hopes for a family and marriage would somehow fall into place.

Dating with purpose means you’re communicating your goals and desires of what you want out of a relationship from the start.

Lesson #3: Choosing Yourself Will Feel Like A Loss, But It’s Always A Gain.

What I respect most about Angela Simmons and her decision to walk away from her relationship with Yo Gotti is that she carries some self-awareness.

It’s a common trap for women: staying in a relationship they know is unfulfilling deep down.

We will settle for the comfort and familiarity, often out of a fear of being single, or because our egos get caught up in proving others wrong, when these relationships are likely built on initial hype rather than a solid foundation.

The reward for choosing yourself over a stagnant relationship is always clarity and peace. From that place of self-reflection, you’ll naturally cultivate the confidence, self-respect, and personal growth you need to move forward.

Conclusion

One of the most valuable decisions you can make is to learn not only from your own mistakes, but from the experiences of others. Angela and Yo Gotti breakup offers three key takeaways we can all learn from:

  • Release the “street dude” fantasy. Don’t believe the hype that loyalty from a street dude can coexist; it’s you or the money.
  • Date with purpose. Going with the flow and hoping for a specific outcome can lead to wasted time and heartbreak. Be clear about your intentions from the start.
  • Choosing yourself is always a gain, not a loss. In the end, clarity and peace of mind are what truly matter, and those are the rewards you earn when you prioritize your well-being.
